The third edition has finally published, which is great news! I just wanted to touch upon some of the changes that we’ve made in the book. Now, in chapter two, we go a lot deeper into mindset, and this is a key feature of how the book has changed. We always talked about mindset before, but now mindset is front and centre. So first of all, why is mindset so important? Well, your mindset drives what you focus on, what you focus on drives your actions, your behaviours, the activities you do, and those drive the outcomes you get. So, the whole theme of the book is that you need to get the mindset right from the start. That’s not easy because what you’ll find is that each time your role changes as you go up to the next level from sort of qualified into managerial, from managerial into leadership, i.e. partner, director; what you’ll find is that your mindset has to shift. This is what’s difficult. This is why actually moving your career upwards is really hard. As the great phrase from Marshall Goldsmith’s says: what got you here, may not get you to the next stage. I paraphrased it slightly. In that second chapter, we talk about the importance of fixed versus growth mindset. There is a lot of work on this that’s been popularized by Carol Dweck. So, what do I mean by fixed and growth mindset? Well, when you’ve got a fixed mindset, you believe that your talent is fixed, it’s nature, not nurture. What does that mean as a result? What if your talent is fixed? You tend to give up quickly because you just can’t do it. If your talent is fixed, you tend not to take onboard feedback because it doesn’t matter. You may be critical and defensive when it comes to feedback. If you believe in that fixed mindset or actually if you’re displaying traits of a predominantly fixed mindset, you often won’t push yourself. Now, why is this unhelpful? If you want to push yourself into deeper, higher levels of your career within professional services? First and foremost, nothing is easy, and everything is hard until you get to learn it. If you’re not prepared to have that flexible mindset and learn stuff and take onboard feedback and you’re not going to move forward. You’ve got to be prepared to put yourself in situations where it doesn’t play to your strengths. But it might be that you’ve just not given time for that strength to form. This is why the mindset is so important. Besides, chapter two still goes into the stuff about what’s your why? What’s your purpose? What are you there to do? Because actually if that’s something you’re not very clear on, you’re going to be often acting out of alignment. The theme of this book is how to make partner and still have a life. Now, if you’re still going to have that life, you’ve got to be on your A-game, you’ve got to be performing well, you’ve got to know what’s important to you because only then can you craft a role that helps you perform to your best. Because when you performed your best, you’ve got a higher likelihood of being able to ask for and get the balance that you crave. That’s why chapter two is still probably the most critical in the book because it helps that start at that mindset journey of helping you get your head around where you need to be, what’s going to feel difficult. Also, accepting that, if you’re going to do something new, it is going to feel difficult. So, get yourself a copy of How to Make Partner and Still Have a Life. It’s a third edition.
